Dinokinetics Brings Interactive Art to Town Square
Jurassic Park meets Asheville. Even for such an artistic town, it's not a picture that is easily imagined, but for one Biltmore Park Town Square tenant, the combination makes perfect sense. Dinokinetics, an interactive exhibit that combines engineering, art, and science, opened its doors earlier this month to art enthusiasts, curious onlookers, and everyone in between.
Designed and executed by the late and well-known River Arts District artist John Payne, the exhibit, which is now being generously displayed by his family, is comprised of large, steel dinosaur skeletons that visitors can move using pulley systems and gameboy controllers. But while the creatures sound fun, they are also quite beautiful.
Inspired by his love for natural history, Payne completed the dinosaurs over the course of four years, fulfilling his dream to be both an educator and artist. Dinokinetics is just as versatile and has enjoyed success in Chicago's Field Museum as well as among groups of young school children. With a location in Biltmore Park Town Square, the exhibit promises to have the same widespread appeal in Asheville, and the space is open to everyone from field trips and retirement groups to fundraisers and cocktail parties. Dinokinetics even offers the opportunity to book a birthday party where a prehistoric safari tour guide will lead children around and teach them about the different dinosaurs on display.
To learn more about Dinokinetics, call 828-676-1622 or 828-301-3797. Admission is $5 per person, and children under the age of three are admitted free of charge.
Girls on the Run 5k to Be Held in Town Square
Biltmore Park Town Square is humming with life. Patio diners are soaking in the rays over lunch; strollers are enjoying shopping along the pedestrian-friendly streets; new retailers are moving in; and special events like Concerts in the Park are welcoming new and old visitors.
Next weekend will be no different because Biltmore Park Town Square will welcome the Western North Carolina chapter of Girls on the Run. Founded in 1996, Girls on the Run today is a large non-profit organization, serving more than 150 cities across North America and works to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program combines physical training for a 5k race, life skills development, and healthy living skills and is a collaboration between participants, their parents, schools, volunteers, and communities.
On Saturday, May 22nd, the girls will have the opportunity to demonstrate how much they have learned when they run in the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k in Biltmore Park Town Square. All runners are welcome to participate, including men and boys, to help support the girls and the program. The race will begin at 10 a.m. and the festivities will continue all day as REI offers participants a 15% discount on one full-price item. The restaurants in Town Square are also eager to welcome runners and their families for a post-race celebratory lunch, and Saturday will also be a wonderful opportunity to explore the fitness opportunities at the state-of-the-art Reuter Family YMCA.
So whether running in the 5k or simply cheering on the girls, consider stopping by Biltmore Park to support this worthy cause. To learn more about Girls on the Run and how you can get involved, visit www.gotrwnc.org.
Kyle Petty Charity Ride to Make Final Stop in Town Square
Biltmore Park Town Square is gearing up for a big Saturday night this weekend when Kyle Petty and friends are set to cruise into Asheville for their last stop on the Kyle Petty Charity Ride before they reach their final destination in Randleman, North Carolina. More than 100 motorcycles will line Town Square Boulevard overnight while the riders stay at the Hilton Asheville.
The Kyle Petty Charity Ride is a seven-day cross country motorcycle ride and fundraiser founded by Kyle Petty and wife Pattie in honor of their son. The ride raises money to support Victory Junction, a year round camp for children with chronic disorders or serious illnesses.
Visitors are welcome to look at the bikes, and may even get a chance to talk to some of the Charity Ride's participants. Petty, when he and fellow riders arrive around 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, will greet onlookers with a little help from a few local radio stations before settling into enjoying an evening in Asheville. Other celebrities participating in the ride include several NASCAR drivers, model Niki Taylor, and athlete Hershel Walker. The group will depart Town Square at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
So this weekend, whether motorcycle fan or not, consider coming by Town Square to support Kyle Petty's worthy cause. Restaurants like Hickory Tavern Grill & Raw Bar, Brixx Pizza, Travinia Italian Kitchen (all of which offer outdoor seating), and more, in addition to Asheville's only stadium-seat movie theater offer plenty of options for those seeking a fun-filled weekend. City Market South to Return Next Week
Vibrant red tomatoes. Fresh baked breads. Homemade pasta. Locally-made goat cheese. All of these products will be available when the much-anticipated City Market South returns to Biltmore Park Town Square on Wednesday, May 5th, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The farmer's market, sponsored by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, offers residents of South Asheville a unique and welcome opportunity to purchase some of Western North Carolina's very own fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, handmade crafts, and more.
The market will line the sidewalk along the median of Town Square Boulevard in the heart of Biltmore Park, creating an ideal destination for one-stop-shoppers. In addition to the market, Town Square's retail and restaurant tenants will also be open for business, and they are well-stocked with apparel, accessories, books, gifts, toys, spa treatments, and food and beverages that promise to keep you prepared throughout the season.
City Market South will be a wonderful addition to Town Square from May through October, offering a variety of seasonal products to patrons. Customers not only will enjoy purchasing healthy and fresh food items but also will contribute to enhancing the local economy and maintaining the area's agricultural heritage. Of course, with so many recipes yet to be tried and so many delicious items from which to choose, visitors will need no other reason than the wonderful offerings to shop at the farmer's market.
But if shopping for local products is of interest, don't forget to stop by Constance Boutique, Moda, Sparrow Spa, or any of the other wonderful locally-owned and operated businesses in Town Square.
Town Square Set to Welcome Back Concerts in the Park
Spring fever has taken hold of Biltmore Park Town Square, and a chillier week has set area residents' determination to get outside and enjoy the season regardless of temperature or rain. Over the past several weeks, families have been out in full force in Town Square, strolling to restaurants, playing in the park outside of Hickory Tavern Grill & Raw Bar, perusing the boutiques and stores that line Town Square Boulevard, and more. After a challenging winter, Biltmore Park's walkability is a major point of appeal for visitors and residents wanting to get outside, not to mention a hot topic for Earth Day this week. But while walkability, dining, and shopping are all exciting, they aren't the only qualities and events that Town Square enthusiasts will enjoy this year.
Right now, Biltmore Park is gearing up to kick off its second annual Concerts in the Park music series. With some of the biggest names in the Asheville music scene scheduled to perform, Town Square will have event-goers up on their feet and dancing into summer in no time. Beginning in May and running through September, the concerts will take place on the first Saturday of every month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Cecil Park (outside of Brixx Pizza and Hickory Tavern Grill and Raw Bar).
The first concert, featuring the Kat Williams Trio, will be next weekend on Saturday, May 1st. Williams' soulful voice and vibrant personality promise to start the concert series off on the right foot. The Vinyl Brothers Big Band, an eleven piece ensemble, will follow in June with tunes from the late 60s and early 70s. An area longtime favorite, Skinny Legs and All, recently made famous by the lead singer's appearance on American Idol, will bring their melodies to Town Square in July, followed by Asheville's own British Pop band The Cheeksters. Finally, Firecracker Jazz Band will finish out the series and lead us into fall with their colorful sounds.
So go ahead, mark your calendars, and get ready to dance the evenings away.
