There’s something magical about winter nights in Asheville. The air turns crisp, snow begins to coat the mountain tops, and holiday lights begin to glow across the city. This year, Biltmore Park Town Square adds something new to that magic: the Winter Lights Trolley to the North Carolina Arboretum.

The Start of a Magical Evening

It all begins in Biltmore Park Town Square, where the streets are lined with twinkling lights and delicious scents waft through the air. Park at any of our parking decks completely free and enjoy a smooth, stress-free experience. Make your way through the glowing streets to the trolley stop in front of Mosaic Café, where families, couples, and friends gather, ready for an evening of holiday cheer.

When you step onto the trolley, the holiday spirit greets you immediately. The vintage design, cozy seats, and cheerful music make it feel like you’ve stepped into a Christmas carol. Everyone is smiling, chatting, and settling in as the trolley begins its short but special journey through South Asheville to the Arboretum.

The Journey to the NC Arboretum

The ride itself is part of the fun. As you roll through the streets, the glow of Biltmore Park fades and the soft darkness of Appalachian night surrounds you. You might catch glimpses of other neighborhoods decorated for the holidays or hear the conductor share a few fun tidbits about the NC Arboretum and its famous Winter Lights display.

There’s a quiet excitement on board as the trolley moves closer to the destination. The lights, the laughter, and the sense of anticipation set the tone for what’s to come.

Stepping Into a Winter Wonderland

When the trolley arrives, you’ll step into a world of color and sparkle. The Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum is a breathtaking, walk-through holiday experience that transforms the gardens into a glowing wonderland. Every tree, path, and flower bed twinkles with beautiful light. Don’t forget to grab your goodie bag on your way off the trolley for some special gifts and exclusive discounts.

Start your walk through the illuminated Quilt Garden, where shifting light designs ripple across the ground. Follow trails lined with glittering arches, glowing snowflakes, and tunnels of color. Children run ahead, pointing out sparkling reindeer and giant ornaments, while adults snap photos under the glowing trees.

Stop by Bent Creek Bistro to pick up a s’mores kit and roast it over the firepits as you warm your hands. Throughout the garden, you’ll find plenty of refreshments, from steaming drinks to sweet treats, perfect for enjoying as you stroll through the glowing displays. Each light scene feels handcrafted and inviting, adding to the cozy and joyful atmosphere.

Making a special visit to the NC Arboretum this year are Thomas Danbo’s Trolls. These world-famous statues are crafted from reclaimed wood and are a must-see for any visit to the Winter Lights exhibit. Pick up a treasure map from the Arboretum to find all 6 trolls hiding throughout the exhibit.

The Ride Back Home

After taking in the magic, the trolley will be waiting to bring you back to Biltmore Park. Make sure to keep track of time because the last return trip to Biltmore park departs at 9:30. The ride home has a calm, cozy feeling. People chat quietly about their favorite displays, scroll through their photos, or simply look out the window as the lights fade into the distance. It’s the perfect time to unwind and reflect on the night.

A Perfect Ending in Biltmore Park

Once you’re back at Biltmore Park, the evening doesn’t have to end. You can stop for dinner, grab a drink, or take a stroll through Town Square to enjoy the festive decorations. Our amazing shops and restaurants offer plenty of ways to keep a wonderful holiday evening going.

The Winter Lights Trolley is more than just transportation. It’s a complete experience that captures the best of the holidays in Asheville. From the glow of the lights to the laughter shared along the way, it’s an evening that feels easy, joyful, and full of the holiday spirit.
